what a life

well, it's friday morning and i have the day off from work (yay!). that's the good news. the bad news is that i went to the dentist this morning and CRIED. dammit! what a baby! i had a chipped tooth and the chip (that they fixed last time) fell out so they had to replace it. anyhoo, they froze half my mouth and then went to town, and then i could feel the drill on my tooth nerve (!!!) and so i jumped back (well, my head moved) and water from the spray hose went everywhere, and little tears started dripping down my face, and they had to use MORE freezing and now half my face is a frozen blob. the good news is that it's over.

i am at my bf's apartment. he lives in my old neighbourhood and really close to my dentist. he is still sleeping because he is a teacher and that's what they do in the summatime! we are leaving today to go to a friend's cottage all weekend - yeeha! these cottage parties are out of control - like a house party from american teen movies. right on a nice lake too and not crazy far away (less than two hours).

i have been eating well and exercising all week. i completed my weekly plan except i took a rest day on wednesday. i cleaned my apartment all night and did all my laundry. yesterday i ran/walked four miles on the treadmill in my gym. i just wasn't feeling the outside. it was tough but i made it through. i am finally back in my maintenance weight zone too. now, the hard part, to keep it that way for two weeks until we leave for paradise. can i do it? during the week - of course, but weekends are my downfall. and cottage weekends? i've already got cans of bud light lime waiting for me in my car hehe. i have tried it before and it's sooooooo good and refreshing! my LCBO was sold out of bottles so i had to purchase cans, which i have never tried but what the hey - it's like beer pop.

i am bringing my running gear to the cottage. my half-marathon training plan says i have to run five miles on saturday. i will have to bring my garmin (love it) to keep track of my distance. hopefully the satellites will co-operate! that's all for now - have a lovely weekend!

no post yesterday

yesterday was sort of productive. it was my three month workaversary so i now i have benefits - good ones too! at lunch i went to "no frills" to purchase food for my birthday party on saturday ... $105 later! what did i get?

pop bottles (diet coke, club soda, diet grapefruit, diet ginger ale)
water bottles (for drunkards)
chips (regular ruffles, ketchup, roasted chicken, smoky bbq, honey mustard party mix)
crackers (three different kinds)
cheese (cheddar and marble)
hummus dip
roasted red pepper dip
asiago cheese and artichoke dip
carrots
celery (bleh)
baby tomatoes
cucumber
cauliflower
white bread for sandwiches
summer sausage meat
lean deli chicken
marble cheese sandwich slices
miracle whip light
eggs
green onions (for egg salad sandwiches)
pc memories of kobe meatballs
reisen chocolate caramels

that is a lot of party food, considering i already have a lot of candy at home. i also bought:

strawberries for me
blueberries for me
chipotle chicken burgers (only 120 calories - pc blue menu) for me
toilet paper (i guess that's for everyone)

it certainly adds up! when i got home from work i brought all that food upstairs and set out on a run. i was feeling kind of porky and i had lots of energy so i ran for 6 miles, all around the town. it's so easy to run downtown because there are so many people and stores to look at. the first part of my run is a little ghetto, then it's all good. i ran past the citytv building where workers were busy setting up the stages for the muchmusic awards this sunday. i'm glad i don't live in that area - it would be a madhouse of screaming jonas brothers fans.

after my run, i boiled fifteen eggs and eighteen mini potatoes. the potatoes and nine of the eggs are for the potato salad i'm bringing to my boyfriend's staff party tonight (i am remaking the clean eating potato salad from the upcoming cookbook that i made a few weeks ago for the work potluck) and the rest of the eggs are for egg salad sandwiches for the party. last year they were the first sandwiches to get eaten which surprised me. i put a bit of curry in the mix so they are special. actually my sister has mentioned them to me about fifty times over the last year so i think she ate them all. this year i am making more so there is enough for all.

after cooking, i cleaned my den. it's kind of a den/storage room, but that doesn't work for party time. i have giant items from costco in there just hanging around - like twenty rolls of bounty paper towels and a value pack of feminine products. yah ... let's hide those items!

today is also busy. at lunch i am going to my mom's office to pick up her famous chocolate chip cookies for the party. isn't she nice to make them for me. she thinks i tell everyone i made them and take all the credit but i swear i don't. i don't want people begging me to make cookies! that happens to my mom ... the neighbours come over and ask. really people! i also have to hit up the LCBO - i don't want to look at that receipt! i'll just read the brail on the interac pinpad and shut my eyes.

after work i have to rush home, quickly put together the potato salad, and jump on the bus to my bf's house. the party starts "right after school." tomorrow will be a day of baking cake, mad cleaning, chopping, assembling, distributing, blowing (balloons people!) decorating, etc. my actual birthday was pretty awesome. my boyfriend gave me roses, wine, made me pad thai (my favorite), gave me ice cream cone cake that his mom made, and gave me a beautiful shirt and an awesome necklace. (see photo below.) he also got me one more awesome gift but i'll tell you about it next week because it deserves it's own post. suspense! anyway, time for work. i am writing this post in advance and the clock is tick tocking! thanks for your birthday wishes everyone. the birthday week continues bwa ha ha.

HOORAY

i had such a fun time at the blogger saturday dinner meet-up last weekend! it was "so fab" to meet you all - i have to say, everyone was so good looking in person (more so than pictures i mean) ... such awesome clothes, shiny hair, nice jewelry, smiling faces, etc. i have a pic or two to post but haven't uploaded anything yet ... busy weekend!

on friday night i made a terrible-for-your-health, excellent-for-your-taste buds hockey dinner. lackluster chicken wings from a frozen pack (which were too spicy even though they were medium - i am over chicken wings ... bleh ... would not purchase at home again), veggies and pc blue menu pretzel waffles with fat free sour cream french onion dip (made from a powder pack plus 1 cup of the sour cream), and the star of the show, steak quesadillas. i seasoned some flat steak-like beef with a bit of italian seasoning and salt/pepper, quickly pan fried it (no oil, just PAM), then cut it up into little strips. meanwhile i chopped some red onion and grated some monterey jack cheese. i used big tomato basil flavoured tortilla shells, brushed one side with olive oil (oil side down), layered cheese, onions, steak, a bit more cheese and then another tortilla on top (with more brushed oil). i let my bf brush the oil on so he could feel "helpful" ha! i made two and they were SO GOOD - better than any quesadilla i've had in a restaurant. i ate too much but the penguins won so it's all good. the best thing about the whole experience is that now i can spell quesadilla without doing a google search.

on saturday i went for a 6-mile run, and then my bf and i rode our bikes to his house, stopping in a park to play catch with this velcro ball game i have. instead of a baseball glove you have this velcro circle attached to your hand. easy catching! it was so beautiful outside and there was a big street/rummage sale in the park. so much fun!

on sunday there was a street festival right outside my bf's apartment so we walked up and down the street a few times. i didn't buy anything from the vendors but there was the usual corn on the cob, yams, bbq'd meat, ice creams, etc. i did, however, go to cobs bread bakery to buy a fresh loaf of bread. i got the cape seed bread which according to the salesgirl (who was so nice, helpful and informative) is their healthiest loaf. it is made with: Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Sesame Seeds, Whole Flaxseed, Sunflower Seeds, Poppy Seed, Country Grain Mix: [Sesame Seed, Sunflower Seed, Oat Flakes, Flax Seed, Millet, Barley Flakes, Rye Flakes], Wheat Gluten, Yeast, Salt, Malt Flour, Wheat Flour, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Enzymes (Amylase), Calcium Carbonate, L-cysteine. some of those things at the end sound questionable but what can you do - better than a kick in the pants. the bread has seeds on the inside and out, is high fibre and low GI, and is made with NO OIL and NO SUGAR. score. it's so good too. yummy yum yum

this week is going to be CRAZY! here is my schedule:

monday: 2.5 year a versary (not doing anything though because it's monday and we both need time to take care of our own business)
tuesday: no doubt concert
wednesday: photo shoot all day, my actual birthday
thursday: nothing
friday: bf's end of year staff party (have to bring a food dish)
saturday: birthday party
sunday: father's day

now, i tend to get stressed about planning. everything must be perfect. perfect dammit! today i am going to dollarama (party supplies) and i will clean/declutter my abode after work. i want to go for a run as well.

keep going

i really was oscar the grouch yesterday. when i got back to the city, i had an email from one of the companies. a rejection email! surprisingly i'm not that bummed about the job. i feel a sense of peace because i know. knowledge is power. anyway, being turned down motivated me to send an email to the other company, asking about the status of the job and just mentioning again why i'm the best person for the job. maybe being pushy like that is a good idea, maybe not. it can't hurt. at least now if they haven't chosen a candidate yet, i will be in their mind as a motivated person. and i feel like i've done everything i possibly can, so there is no self-doubt. if i get the job, i will be ecstatic. and if not, i will try to convince myself that it wasn't meant to be, and that something else will come along soon.

last night my book club potluck was a great success. there was lots of yummy food and fun times. it was a big mess but i cleaned it up pretty fast by dumping all the leftover food. what is the point of keeping it if i'm not going to eat it. like leftover slices of homemade pizza, spinach dip, those little baked appetizers, etc. there were also some cookies and holiday treats, but i think they were re-partied to begin with. and not really that good or exciting. i wouldn't re-party them, because i wouldn't want to say they were leftovers, and i definitely wouldn't want to imply that i made them! so into the garbage they went.

tonight is my boyfriend's holiday work party. i am bringing the cookies i made (all four kinds from the kraft website listed a few posts back) and lower fat oreos half dipped in melted white chocolate and sprinkled with green sprinkles. yummo :)

yesterday i didn't get in any exercise, but i woke up early this morning and swam for 30 minutes. i really didn't want to but once i started it was fine... better than fine... good!

apparently the city is being attacked by "snowmageddon" tomorrow morning and all day. i didn't make up that word... the weather people did!

back on it

ah monday, you kill me every time. actually today i'm feeling alright. i just want to go to bed and read lots of books and drink copious amounts of tea.

my weekend was pretty good. i did some relaxing, some shopping, had a 40-minute swim on saturday, and went to a girls holiday kris kringle exchange party. i got a book that i really wanted to read (three cups of tea), and i also overindulged in holiday treats. but that's ok. i didn't feel stuffed. i just wanted to try everything once. and a few things twice. ;)

i am back on my game this week. i don't really have any evening events this week, so i am going to do the same thing as last week (monday to thursday). small portions, higher protein, only eating when hungry, and walking 2.5-3 miles a day. it was easier than i thought it would be last week and really effective. i forgot how good it felt to be back in the middle of my maintenance range, instead of at the very top. the week after this one is a crazy one for holiday parties.

i feel so sleepy today! z is for zombie.

late post today

i didn't exercise this morning because i am all partied out. i'm going to do something tonight... probably a few 10 minute runs on the treadmill with weights and sit-ups in between. i can hear thunder out the window right now so an outside run is probably out of the question.

my party on saturday was a great success. probably the best party i've ever had. i woke up around ten thirty on saturday and cleaned up for a bit, then went on an awesome 5-mile run while my boyfriend made us breakfast. i spent the whole day cooking and cleaning and he went shopping for last-minute additions. we ran out to pick up the cake from one of my good friends who so nicely made it, and stopped at mcdonald's for dinner. i know... you are thinking... mcdonald's? seriously. i have nothing against fast food really. it's ok every once in a while if you usually avoid it. i had a hamburger with no mayo and small fries. yummy.

i made so much food for the party: crackers and cheese, chips, popcorn, cookies, egg salad sandwiches, deli chicken sandwiches, pb and j sandwiches, a veggie platter, bowls of nuts, hershey kisses, mike and ike's, m & m's, fuzzy peaches, meatballs with honey garlic sauce, jello shooters, a vodka punch, fortune cookies... the list goes on and on. surprisingly people ate 90% of all the food which makes me happy.

here is a photo of one spread:

here is a photo of the cake... the fire alarm just went off!

and here is a photo of my orange and black outfit... check the shoes :)

i think you can click on the photos to make them bigger. this morning after i left school i stopped at this cute coffee shop and tried a vegan chocolate chip cookie. i have never had vegan baking before (that i was aware of) and it was really delicious....

my plan worked

yes that's a pogo stick a.k.a. corn dog. it has been a very long week and it's almost over... hallelujah! last night i got a lot of stuff done. it's true, i am very organized. but i have to be because i know myself and i tend to get really flapped out about not having enough time to get everything i want done. i used to have a problem with anxiety and i think the main reason that i'm cool as a cucumber all the time now is because i burn off all my energy at the gym. seriously, like my dad says, if i were any calmer, i'd be dead!

i almost freaked out last night. i got home from work, and decided to clean the inside of the fridge before i went shopping for any party foods. so i cleaned it, and then was taking a coffee break on my balcony, when i realized how much i had left to do. too bad i wasn't wearing my heart rate monitor, because i'm sure my bpm was going up and up. it ended up alright though. i went to the dollar store and the cheap ass no frills for party supplies. then i came home and cleaned until 2am!

the only things i didn't do are a) wash the floors b) sew/fix this tiny hole in my couch and c) windex the balcony doors - there are doors in the living room and the bedroom. i figure why bother washing the floors now when i can do it on saturday, and my boyfriend can windex the doors. "is there anything i can do to help?" why yes, yes there is!

so. all clean, laundry is done, speakers set up and songs uploaded, food and decorations bought. now i need booze. BOOZE.

obviously i didn't work out this morning because i was up so late. but my internal alarm woke me up at 6:45. stupid internal alarm. i tossed and turned for a while and then got up. friday is weigh-in day. last friday i was 121.8, on saturday 123, on monday 122.8 and today.... 117.8! yes people, that's a 5-pound drop from monday to today. i really stopped the madness.

today on the menu is:

coffee
more coffee

cherries

protein oatmeal:
1 scoop protein powder (vanilla)
1 packet pc blue menu multigrain oatmeal
1 T flax
cinnamon
splenda
1/2 banana

carrots with hummus
peanut butter and 1/2 banana sandwich on whole wheat
source yogurt and grapes

granny smith apple (why is called "granny smith" anyway?)

dinner ?
have a great weekend everybody :o)

i see the light

this week i am very busy. not so much at work but in my home life. i am throwing myself a birthday party on saturday and am really anal about a) having a spotless, immaculate apartment (who am i, my mother?) b) providing drinks and a delicious spread c) looking hot and fabulous and d) being able to accomplish everything without feeling stressed at all. the pressure is on people!

i made myself a to-do list at the beginning of the week and am crossing things off as i go along. the list includes EVERYTHING i have to do... from cleaning the bathroom, to buying plastic cups at the dollar store, to finding a new party dress, to shaving my legs, to windexing the giant window/doors to my balcony, to cutting up veggies for a veggie platter, to losing my above-maintenance extra weight. there are about fifty other things on the list. not kidding.

last night was my sewing class and it was fun. we talked about using patterns and then cut them out and pinned them to the fabric and cut out the fabric. when i got home (at 9:30!) i cleaned my entire bathroom and did an inventory of the party supplies i already have. it doesn't help that on friday i am going to a different birthday party. getting my friend a present is on my list of to-do things!

anyway that's boring. my boyfriend told me last night that he booked our tickets yesterday. we are flying out on the last sunday in july and coming back the next sunday. i am really excited. and i really need a vacation!

this morning i did a 4-mile run around town, then came back to the condo gym for some arm weights and sit-ups. i am still following my plan of breakfast being the biggest meal of the day, then lunch, then dinner. it's working out well for me... since i am so busy in the evenings this week i don't have time to think about making anything exciting for dinner. the protein powder is still working in my favour... this morning i made one with 1/2 banana, unsweetened almond breeze, and frozen mangos and peaches. tropical yum!

now to get on with thursday! (i am actually happy it's thursday not friday, because i need tonight to do more party prep.)

rain rain go away

i was feeling better by lunch yesterday so i walked on the treadmill for a while and then my bf's mom picked me up and we drove to his school for a TALENT SHOW! oh yeah! he made two bands in his class, one girls and one boys, and played guitar with each of the bands. it was so cute. we left halfway through because it was soooo long.

my hummus was a huge hit last night. i guess the power of the secret worked! and now i am back at work. joy! it's not that bad, because my job is the best and i like the routine of being here and not at home where i can get into trouble. tonight i am going with my friend to this exclaim magazine party. one of my friends sometimes writes music reviews for them and asked me to come along. it's free food (yes!) and drinks (yes!!) from 6-8 and then tokyo police club is playing. i haven't listened to them before but they are popular... or so it seems.

today i took a day off from exercise since i am still feeling a bit off. not sick, but mentally exhausted or something. i need to relax. good thing the weekend starts in... 6 hours.

the new book i am reading is: the constant princess by philippa gregory. she also wrote the other boleyn girl and the boleyn inheritance. this book is about catherine of aragon, the spanish princess who was betrothed to prince arthur of england when they were both toddlers. so she married him and then he died, and she married his brother henry. so she's the spanish queen (of england) who henry kicked off the throne (basically changing the religion of england to do so) in order to bring in anne boleyn. interesting? oh yes - you couldn't make up stories this good!

anyhoo, today on the menu is:

pc blue menu multigrain oatmeal with flax and pumpkin
mixed berries
coffee

leftover tomato meatball soup
kashi crackers

source yogurts with grapes and mixed berries

and then dinner at the partay!

bad mood betty

i am not impressed with today. already, it's pouring outside, i was a smushed sardine (against people with b.o.) on the streetcar this morning, my curtains crashed to the floor in my bedroom for no reason, i tried to put them back up (with screws and a drill) and they crashed down again, leaving a stupid ugly hole in my freshly painted wall, i am going to a bridal shower right after work today and had to bring my outfit to work, which means i have to get ready at work, and so on so on so on blah blah blah.

the shower is so far up north that i have to take the subway all the way up to the last stop, where a friend is meeting me and driving us the rest of the way (about 30 mins). it is an italian wedding shower which means a five-course dinner. i am not complaining about that, of course. :o) however, i am not in the mood to play any shower games. and if anyone asks me when i am getting married i am going to wind up my arm like a female baseball pitcher and sock 'em one! yes, i said sock 'em. then i am taking the subway all the way back downtown and meeting up with my boyfriend and our friend who is having a birthday party at a dance club. keep in mind that i won't have gone home all day! obviously i'm going to have to leave clothes and stuff at work. i hate being a dance place and carrying a purse. girls with purses are soooooo annoying. they are always bumping into everything. damn it!

today is weigh in and i am 118.4 up 2.2 pounds from last week. i am not surprised because i could not keep my hands out of the cereal box. seriously i was a snacking fiend. it doesn't bother me at all that i gained, because i'm in the range, but it bothers me that i couldn't stop snacking. i wasn't even hungry. i knew i wasn't hungry and in my mind i said, "close the box, close it right now" and i still didn't. next week my goal will be not to snack on cereal. maybe i will hide the cereal. how ridiculous.

today i'm eating:

1 blueberry fibre waffle
100g source yogurt

weight control oatmeal with flax and a 1/3 package regular oatmeal (i put too much water in)
coffee coffee coffee

ravioli lean cuisine with added red, yellow, orange peppers

an apple

super fabulous dinner

monday monday can't trust that day

ah, monday again. i had a great weekend. on saturday i went for a jog and then hung up a picture and made the other bedside table. we went to a fun party outside of the city - it was a house party and so cute... there were little bowls of candy everywhere, and in the basement a jam room so we rocked it out. i played the drums (not very well). smash boom bang!

yesterday i visited my parent's in the burbs. on the way i stopped off at planet organic in port credit. everyone on the blogs has been talking about it and i wanted to see what was up. i bought a can of adzuki beans, some maple nut oatmeal, annie's whole wheat mac and cheese, and a container of that creamy tomato soup. mmmmm. i got the beans because every time i watch you are what you eat, the host goes on and on about how great and good for you these beans are. i plan on throwing some in a salad tonight. at first i got some dry adzuki beans from the bulk section, then i found them ready in a can. i put the bag (of bulk) on the shelf and just as i was doing it an employee says, "SO! (loudly) are you finding everything you are looking for?" uh oh... caught in the act! i felt like a jerk for the rest of my shopping trip but i'm over it now.

after that i went to pier one and bought the chair of my dreams. it was on sale and here it is, although i got it in black:

these chairs are so rad. they look so retro, and i can fit my entire body in it, which is great for cozy reading time. and in the summer i can drag it out on my balcony and read there... can't wait. i have ALWAYS wanted a chair like this and now all my dreams are coming true.

THEN i had some tire air pressure problems and my dad made me go (right away! and with him) to the gas station to put more air in. during the superbowl! yes, that's right - my dad left the football to help me with my tire woes. personally i don't care about football but he does. i thought that the superbowl just happened in november but apparently that was the grey cup. shows what i know!

anyway that's about it for now. i am not exercising as hard this week. tonight i am meeting up with a friend for a drink with a capital D. looking forward to it!

my menu today:
breakfast:
oatmeal pumpkin pancake (2)
clementine (0.5)
coffee and tea
2.5/19

snack:
oatmeal (3)

hello lover

i can't wait for the sex and the city movie. next topic!

last night i tried out the condo gym. it's not great, but not that bad. i hate how all the weight machines are just one super giant weight machine - it feels very contained. also, not the same quality as all of the individual machines at my old gym. i ran on the treadmill for 30 minutes as well. there are two big flat screen TVs - one positioned in front of the bikes, and one in front of the elliptical machines. in front of the treadmills there is... a big white wall. actually it's a window but the blinds were pulled down. not the most exciting but still better than nothing. i think these machines are telling me i'm burning more calories than i'm actually burning - because i can't enter my weight at the beginning of the workout. i'll have to judge my workouts by time instead of calories burned.

today is the first of many holiday parties. it's my book club and this month we read "atonement" by ian mcewan. it is now a movie out in theatres, which i haven't seen yet but plan to eventually. the book is quite nice so i would recommend it.

tomorrow there it is the "first annual" christmas party in my condo, so i'm going to that and hope to meet some new peeps. yes, i said peeps - friends, not easter peeps if you are confused. friday is my bf's staff party - i was thinking about making some chocolate bark with blueberry bite that i saw in the paper yesterday. i love blueberries. saturday my couch is being delivered and it's also my one-yearaversary. swoon! in addition to all of that, my best friend who has been living in australia for the past year is coming home this week and i'm going to visit her on sunday. ho ho holy moly busy week!

today i'm eating:

1 slice of bodywise bread
1 clementine
pc blue menu cinnamon and spice oatmeal with blueberries
carrot slices
chef boyardee macaroni and cheese
2 slices of bodywise bread
1 clementine

and for dinner - i'm thinking a big salad with chicken. that way maybe i'll order dessert at bookclub.
