STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH!! I had this same problem in February when I was running 4-5 miles every other day. I would be to lazy afterwords to stretch and ended up ruining my knees! I started doing yoga, iced it nonstop, and used a knee brace. It's better now, but it took about 5 weeks for it to heal! Seriously, stretch. And take some tylenol.

I have bad knees, and I have been told my more than one doctor to build up my quad muscles more.

Also, when desparate, I turn to aspirin - it's an anti-inflammatory and it really works for me.

I have the odd twinge in my knees during a really long run but nothing major .. thus far.
If you have time, it might be worth it to go and just make sure you have the right shoes if you haven't done so already. Our local Running Room is awesome with making sure you have the proper shoes for your gait.
Are you running on the same surface all the time? If you are running on the road, try (if safe to do), switch side as roads are graded and the slight lean to one side can cause this as well.

Saw the "HELP" request and thought I would stop by.

Few things...First, knees are tricky. They're the most commonly misdiagnosed running injury. I'd go get em checked out, just in case, instead of self-diagnosing.

That being said :)
Make sure your shoes are not worn down. Knees will start to hurt when your shoe padding is worn.

Others mentioned stretching. Totally important ... both before and after! And make sure to do IT-band stretching.

Good old RICE.

I have multiple knee issues, and just run through it. One of the issues is arthritis ... so not much I can do. I make sure to rest WELL after long distances, ice after a long run, and do a lot of stretching. I also take a lot of pain medication :)

Good luck on your half marathon. Double digit miles is a huge milestone, enjoy it. Most people will never get to experience it. My wife just ran her first half and the sense of accomplishment is awesome to see. It's worth the time and effort. As for the knee pain...tylenol, stretching, strengthening, and ice.

Those stretchy things were pretty useless for me. Try running on softer ground and concentrate on your form. My ankle starts to hurt if I am leaning further to one side than the other...
