back on it

ah monday, you kill me every time. actually today i'm feeling alright. i just want to go to bed and read lots of books and drink copious amounts of tea.

my weekend was pretty good. i did some relaxing, some shopping, had a 40-minute swim on saturday, and went to a girls holiday kris kringle exchange party. i got a book that i really wanted to read (three cups of tea), and i also overindulged in holiday treats. but that's ok. i didn't feel stuffed. i just wanted to try everything once. and a few things twice. ;)

i am back on my game this week. i don't really have any evening events this week, so i am going to do the same thing as last week (monday to thursday). small portions, higher protein, only eating when hungry, and walking 2.5-3 miles a day. it was easier than i thought it would be last week and really effective. i forgot how good it felt to be back in the middle of my maintenance range, instead of at the very top. the week after this one is a crazy one for holiday parties.

i feel so sleepy today! z is for zombie.

cutting corners

last night i was feeling really sick. my throat was hurting and i felt really weary, so i got into bed around 10 and read until 10:30. i should mention that before i went to bed i slathered my head in olive oil. my hairdresser said i should do this for the good of my hair and my scalp. i put on one of those head towels but took it off halfway through the night because it was stifling me. my hair was dry by then anyway.

i got up early and went swimming. i wet my hair in the shower, put on conditioner, wet the new swim cap i got yesterday, and put that on too. hopefully it made a difference. they didn't have any silicone caps at walmart, only rubber ones and fabric ones, so i got a fabric one. it said it blocks out the chlorine. i can't imagine it blocks out all the chlorine, but i mainly just want something to keep the conditioner on my hair for as long as possible. afterwards i used my new violet shampoo. it was sort of expensive but i got a really big container which was more economical than the little ones. i didn't buy the same brand of conditioner because i thought the shampoo was more important.

since it's still sort of early, i am going to make a to-do list and get things done. i am going to clean and vacuum my apartment, put on tunes and really get in the swing of things, then apply for some more jobs. in the afternoon i am heading to the burbs because tonight i have plans with my mom to bake chocolate chip cookies. my mom makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. no cookie rivals her cookies. and i am not just saying this. everyone who tries them is hooked. if her neighbours hear that she is baking cookies, they come knocking on the door asking for a plate. she uses both dark chocolate and milk chocolate chips, and the cookies stay chewy forever. forever! you can break a cookie in two and there will be no crumbs, just two delicious cookie halves. anyhoo. we are making cookies because tomorrow night is my boyfriends birthday party and i thought having cookies would be an excellent party addition. and because i have nothing to do tonight until late and i thought it would be a good opportunity for some mom time. since i have been eating these cookies since the dawn of time i'm not as tempted by them as newcomers. all i need is one or ten still warm and gooey from the oven. i kid!

i am also making egg salad sandwiches for the party, but i'm doing that tomorrow. the thought of serving day-old egg sandwiches is pretty raunch. i personally, don't think egg salad sandwiches are that great, but i made them for my party and they were gone so fast, and my sister raved on and on about them. it was my first time making them too. all of those eggs and mayo... my points tracker shudders at the thought. the trick is to add a dash of curry powder. and omit the chopped celery because celery is sick.

i forgot to ask this question: does anyone feel when they are counting points that they are cutting corners? for example, eating 1/4 cup of 3 or 4 different veggies, all 0 points each, or adding 1/4 cup all bran to your cereal for 0 points (it really is 0 points... but not 0 calories!).

and finally, yesterday at walmart i bought a value pack of 80-100 calories chocolate bars. there are six of each of aero bars, kit kats, and coffee crisps. i'm thinking that if i allow myself one every day, it will reduce my cravings, and i will be less inclined to act upon my cravings since i know i can have another one tomorrow. hopefully this plan works!

don't waste your money

i know getting an iced latte from starbucks is a great treat on a hot day, but you don't have to waste your money everyday. nor do you have to keep cold coffee in your fridge people. nor? the secret to having a delicious iced coffee whenever, not wherever (only at home) is INSTANT coffee!

if you think it tastes bad, maybe you are thinking of your parent's instant coffee. instant coffee, like any modern food, is just one of those things that scientists strive to improve on... like the seedless watermelon. not that i would know much about that because i detest all melons. it's true.

here is how to make a great iced coffee - no waiting.

1) get a 500 mL glass. i like to use a pint glass that somehow made its way from the pub into my cabinet. (don't ask me how it got there, i didn't take it for real!)

2) instant coffee is 1 rounded teaspoon per cup, so i scoop in 2 teaspoons.

3) the trick is now to add a very small amount of boiling water, just enough to dissolve the coffee.

4) now is the time to add your flavour, maybe some sugar free vanilla syrup, or sweeteners, or real sugar if you're wild and crazy.

5) add milk, soy milk, almond breeze... whatever floats your boat. about 1/3 of the glass should be full.

6) fill up the rest of the glass with cold water.

7) pop in some ice cubes, and a straw if you so desire, and you are good to go.

VOILA!

i took shelley's advice and got a fuel belt. it was $50 at the running room which is $$$ in my world, but it's worth it. the other belts just had one giant bottle at the back and i was not into it. after i bought it, i looked to see if i could get one for cheaper online, but shipping included, not possible. if anyone finds a cheaper one... keep it to yourself haha. i didn't want pink necessarily, but it's pretty cute.

the man at the store said the bottles go at the back.

i am at home today, so instead of doing more HIIT as planned, i'm going for a run outside (after i enjoy my iced coffee of course). it's nice and sunny. oh, and i must have been hugging the wrong side of my spare pillow in the night, because i have these insane, deep indentations in my face! i've had sleep marks before, but never like this.

i am reading the year of fog by michelle richmond so i'm going to go back to bed and do that while i finish my iced coffee. it's so good! it's about this child who goes missing... i can't put it down.

last night before bed i had a candy attack. i ate tootsie rolls and candy corn from my halloween stash. is it weirder that these are the candies i like or that i STILL have a candy stash from halloween? i still have candy corns from when i made vampire cookies for my boyfriend's students. this post is too full of links. i don't know what i'm eating today yet. maybe just iced coffee all day!

oops - one more thing. i found this superfun link (for fitness nerds!) women, click on either the "bulking" or "cutting"... i don't know anyone that would choose bulking hahaha. anyway it opens an excel sheet and you put your stats in and it tells you what your resting metabolic rate is, and how many calories (of protein, carbs, and fat) you should eat per day to "cut." i couldn't eat with such rigidity (i can't believe that's a word!) but it's still very interesting! bye for now.

good day today

today is going to be a good day. why? because tonight is my book club meeting and since we read the other bolelyn girl, we are meeting early to see the movie, and then having drinks afterward to discuss the book. i love going to the movies but i don't seem to go that often... i have a short attention span and fall asleep in the theatre about half the time. weird? maybe!

this morning i was going to get up early and work out, but i fell back asleep after my alarm went off. i headed down at about 7:20, and ran for 3.5 miles (30 minutes running, 5-6 minutes walking) and used the stationary bike for another 10-15 minutes. i thought i would be late but i just had a really fast shower and made it to work for my regular time.

f.y.i. on hungry girl today they have a recipe for 1 point chocolate chip cookies. the best part of this recipe is that it only makes 8 cookies, so you don't feel overwhelmed by having a thousand delicious cookies staring at you through every tupperware container in your house.

today i'm eating:

1/2 granola bar (1)

pc blue menu oatmeal (3)
with flax and pumpkin (1)
banana (1)
blueberries (0)

yogurt (1.5)
strawberries (0)
oatmeal (2)
grapes (1)

and for dinner? probably going out to eat. :)
