wasting time

i am in love with frozen raspberries. and this week my local grocery store has them on sale for $4.00 so i am going back today to stock up. i don't know how much they normally cost but yummo! and a giant serving (140g) is 0 points. can't beat the zero!

last night i tried an eating "experiment." when i got home from work i was feeling the hunger, so i ate 1/2 a banana and then went down to the gym to do day 3 week 2 of the couch to 5k program. it's not that intense - a five minute walk, then six sets of 1.5 minutes running and 2 minutes walking, and then at the end a five minute cool down walk. i managed to make it through pain free which is a huge bonus. i think if i want to do any running, i'm going to have to do it at night time. that's ok with me, because it doesn't take up that much time. i'm not going on any long runs or anything.

my eating experiment was to try and keep my dinner really light. i had a scoop of protein powder (2 points), a cup of unsweetened vanilla almond breeze (1 point), 140g frozen raspberries (0 points) and the other half of my banana (1 point). so 4 points which is substantial, but still a very light meal that doesn't sit heavy in the stomach. and then this morning i am more than 2 pounds lighter. i was definitely still feeling the weekend bloat and water retention!

yesterday randi asked when i started to gain weight, and if it was when i stopped working. well, i'd say probably not when i stopped working, but instead when i stopped running. i was really hardcore and probably burned so many calories running. and i was eating a lot to make up for running so much. a lot of my runs, 4 or so times a week, would be an hour or 6 miles. so my portions were bigger and i was used to eating that much and that's the problem. i am still a volume eater but am trying to cut down on portion size. truthfully i haven't gained that much weight, not even ten pounds, but five becomes ten and then more and more and that's when it becomes a problem. and my business skirt didn't fit, let's not forget that.

today for breakfast i am making an egg and cheese sandwich. 2 slices ezekiel bread (2 points, and truthfully i am not that crazy about this bread. it's *too* fibrous, which i never thought i would hear myself say), 1/4 cup egg whites (0.5 points) and 1 slice kraft fat free cheese (0.5 points). maybe ketchup or a tomato slice too. :)

some delicious recipes

yesterday i managed to return the bike to the original store (for store credit only) and then go across town to another canadian tire to buy the same bike (this second store wouldn't accept the return on the first bike). it was a big hassle and very annoying but it worked out for the best because the new bike is put together much better than the first bike. you never know about these canadian tire bike mechanics. they never seem to be in the store, and who knows who they are or what kind of bike-putting-together certificate they have.

on to happier things. yesterday i made altered banana oatmeal bread. i found the recipe on weight watchers online but it was 4 points per slice (and 10 to the loaf) so i made some adjustments and my slices are only 2 points each (with 10 to a loaf as well).

banana oatmeal bread

Ingredients:
* 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
* 1/2 tsp table salt
* 1/2 tsp baking soda
* 1/4 tsp baking powder
* 3 tsp Manischewitz (Canada) Apple sauce, unsweetened
* 1 egg
* 2 items egg white(s)
* 3 medium banana(s)
* 1 cup Quaker Oats (U.S.) Old-Fashioned Oats
* 1/2 cup unpacked light brown sugar

Directions:
* Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, stir together dry ingredients. Add oil and eggs; mix thoroughly.

* In a smaller bowl, mash bananas with a potato masher or fork. Add bananas and oatmeal to batter.

* Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray. Pour batter into pan and bake until top of loaf is firm to touch, 45 to 55 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool in pan for 5 minutes. Flip out and cool on a wire rack for another 10 minutes.

i had a warm piece out of the oven (obviously) and one for breakfast this morning. delicious. and then, for dinner i had pasta with meat sauce. i combined one package ground turkey (450g) with one jar of healthy choice garlic lovers pasta sauce, and onions, red pepper, orange pepper, yellow pepper, basil, 1/2 zucchini... 1/4 of the recipe is 5 points and a pretty generous portion considering there is meat in there. first i sauteed the onions, added the meat, when that was done added the chopped veggies, and then finally the sauce. it was weird only eating 1 cup (3 oz.) of pasta but i guess it's the bigger portions that caused me to gain a bit of weight back in the first place. it's hard to remember that pasta should be thought of as a side dish instead of the main part of the meal.

i'd also like to add that the recipe builder on weight watchers online is totally worth the monthly fee. it's so easy to input anything and much less time consuming than doing everything yourself. and now, when you input an ingredient, you can just input the stats on the nutrition label and then indicate how many servings of that product are going into the recipe. for example, the nutrition info for the pasta sauce was only for 1/2 cup, but i used the whole jar, which was 5.6 servings. interesting, no?

today i am going for a walk by the lake, then working on my job hunt, then some reading, perhaps a swim. is anything good on tv tonight?

sad or what?

i came to work today even though i had planned to take a vacation day. why? nothing to do. is that sad or what? my boyfriend went home yesterday and is coming back to the city tonight and i could have spent the day at home, hanging around, but it's not really that nice outside (not sunny) and i hate sitting around all day watching tv. that is so boring. now having tomorrow off will feel like a special treat. i am going to a canada day bbq... mmmm... bbqs. that reminds me i will have to pick up food and booze and stuff tonight.

speaking of booze, yesterday i made beer bread. it is soooo easy. here is the recipe:

3 cups flour
3 t sugar
3 t baking powder
1 t basil
12 oz warm beer

i used 2 cups white flour and 1 cup whole wheat flour. i was going to make it all with splenda and whole wheat flour, but i didn't want it to taste gross. not that it necessarily would have, but you know. i used zywiec beer, because my boyfriend is polish and i liked the people dancing on the bottle.

anyway it's so easy to make. you just mix the dry ingredients, then incorporate the beer until just mixed. then you plop it into a prepared bread pan and bake for 50 minutes at 350°F. prepared bread pan means that you grease it/spray it with cooking spray, and then sprinkle it with rough cornmeal (i used whole wheat flour and it was fine) to avoid the sticking. see? easy! the bread it more cake-like than the bread you would purchase in the supermarket.

on saturday it was raining so i went down to the condo gym for a quick workout. i did 20 minutes running, arm weights, 10 minutes running, then decided that was enough for me thank you very much. yesterday i took a rest day. this morning i went back to the gym and did 15 minutes running, arm weights, 15 minutes biking, more arm weights, 10 more minutes running, and situps. the biking was so hard. i was really pushing it for 1 minute (trying to get a rpm of 100 on level 10) and then slowing a bit for 2 minutes (rpm of 85 at level 10). when i got off the bike my legs were like jello.

in other news, i've been really into making spicy hummus wraps lately. i use a whole grain tortilla (about 170 calories), 2 T spicy hummus, cut up about 1/4 yellow pepper, sprinkle some shredded carrots, peel a string cheese, and add baby spinch - then wrap it up and enjoy. it's filling and healthy and sooooooo spicy! it is still substantial because of the tortilla and the hummus, but feels light because of the veggies.

in more other news, i got this book at the bookstore yesterday:

lonely planet coastal california... *sigh of happiness*
